Client Gets Screwed by Under skilled and disorganised Developers

January 16th, 2010

Last week I received a phone call of distress from one of our clients. The were asking for some advice regarding issues they were having with a Web Application that was developed for them by another company and was released into production the week before. Now I’m not going to name names, or even mention what Web Technology was used – this is not what this rant is about.

Introduction

The plea for help was pre-empted with a light-hearted exchange between the Client and I where the client jokingly blamed me for the predicament that they were currently in.

“You said late last year that you had a full schedule and that you were not taking on any new projects until February (resulting in them hiring these guys) [...] so it’s your fault!”

I know the Client very well and they are very reliant upon the technical consultants that they hire to provide direction and complete the project as they have no technical expertise themselves or technical staff internally. This Client needs to be taken good care of (of course, as do all clients) since they put total trust into the technical consultants that they hire and have no real input into the direction of the development aside from the business rules.

The problem is, with the exception of the Web Development company I work for, it seems as though they keep picking the wrong Web Development companies when they are not with us.

From what I hear, the web development companies they hire are full of hype and seem to be stepping into the projects without covering the usual bases. Now, for a company whose average project consists of Mission Critical Web Applications as opposed to your run of the mill Joomla CMS, Sugar CRMs or E-Commerce websites, this is very dangerous.

Several hours later, I’m bumping into inline styles, redundant div nesting and crappy css! FFS I just wanted to change a couple of defaults! VM team! Please update your default template to use semantic mark up!!!! I can’t put it anyother way… The default virtuemart theme is a piece of $***.

MyBlogLog’s misreported adsense clicks

January 13th, 2008

I use mybloglog to keep track of activity on my blog. This includes statistics on links that a user clicks on. The idea behind tracking this is pretty simple. A user clicks on a link or an ad which then gets recorded by mybloglog as an anonymous click same concept as google’s adsense tracking system.

2mhost Sucked my .com out, now I’m going .Net

November 14th, 2007

Screw this, I’m going .Net!!! … As in http://www.rvdavid.net that is. Due to a mishap which resulted in my domain name being held hostage by my old host 2mhost, I’ve decided to forget about the .com domain and shift to .net!

It’s been a dark couple of weeks, but now that there’s light at the end of the tunnel and the dust has settled, what emerges from the ashes is the my new domain rvdavid.net. It’s a long story but I’ll tell the tale for those who want to read. Continue on to quickly review the way that 2mhost, the cheap web hosting company, services with customers.

update: I noticed that they have added a “why am I seeing this website?” link which is a mailto link to enom’s whois-help.info. Just so it’s known, my gripe is not because my domain has expired. What makes this thing sour for me is that 2mhost had/is deliberately ignoring my attempts to contact them to achieve the resolution that I as a once paying customer deserve. – At the time, I coudln’t access the rvdavid.com domain through enom since 2mhost is the registered reseller – no other routes to take aside from dealing with 2mhost directly – who don’t answer my emails – am I asking them to bend over backwards? no way! but ffs guys, respond to emails.

You had no problems replying to emails when I was a brand new sale! anyway… the story goes…

Sporadic Server Down Times with 2M Host

December 11th, 2006

“Quality Cheap Hosting” is slowly becoming one of those marketing buzzwords that no one will eventually believe. Last night was an extremely frustrating, “kill an innocent looking animal” moment for me. I had time to do some things on my Web Site, did some changes messed around with copy and when the time came to view it live, guess what? My site was down. I thought well this is probably the .01% of the time when it’s down. I decided to leave it for a few hours. Tried again, it was still down.
