Trying out some of The best 100 Linux Software from Ubuntu Repos

September 29th, 2009

Ever get the itch that there is a lot of free applications that you’re missing out on? Well I do – every now and then, I like to google “best linux software” and try a few of them out. Don’t ask me why, I just do it.

Anyway, todays post is basically to bring your attention to a site that I’ve found, posted last year, which lists 100 linux software applications that the author considers “the best”.

Guake: FINALLY! A viable gnome native Drop Down Terminal

September 26th, 2009

I’ve been using YeahConsole for quite some time now and snobbing off Yakuake because I am using Gnome for my Desktop GUI. But missed the flashiness of Yakuake – it was flashy especially with the true transparency.

GUAKE!

Years ago prior to checking out YeahConsole, I found Guake. Guake at the time, was buggy as hell. at the time, the Developer was in hiatus and I thought to myself, wouldn’t it be great if someone could actually pick this project up.

NSS Backup – a “Not So Simple Backup” solution for Linux

May 14th, 2009

As mentioned on my previous post, I’ve started using NSS Backup as my primary backup solution for my mobile workstation which runs Ubuntu Linux. I gotta say, it’s running pretty well, although recently I’ve had issues with Ubuntu recognising the mountable external hard disc I’ve been using as a back-up drive – save that story for another time – but yeah, it’s running pretty well. As mentioned I had asked the question. One of the development team members answered the question and requested that I open a ticket.

sbackup issue: 30 GB Root Partition Full?! HOW?!

March 21st, 2009

So a while ago, some time at close of business, I was doing some final tests for the fourth phase of project achilles when all of a sudden, I’ve been struck with some random mysql errors. “Data source not available” and other similar errors with other etc.

This is some crazy s#it which I didn’t need, deadlines coming at me left, right and centre, this is the last thing you want!

I thought it may have been a memory issue so I did a du:

du -s * | sort -nr | head

This reported that my fricking hard disk was full!!!!

How? why?! … HOW?!?!?

Evolution Mail Client Mixed messages up!!!

June 27th, 2008

I’m inches away from shoving my fist through my laptop screen! I don’t know how something like this could happen, but Evolution, the Mail Client I’ve switched to, has somehow mixed my email messages up. This is a real pain in the neck because while there was a solution for fixing it up by moving the files into a new folder so that they will be in sync again, it doesn’t fix the emails that I have received in the past few days – and these were the most important ones!

With this, I’ve decided to ditch Evolution. Such a pity, I liked how it worked and all that, but this is the second time this has happened. Evolution is out, good old faithful email workhorse Thunderbird is back in action.
